Palaeography of documentary papyri (any, really) is part art, part science. One of your goals this semester is to familiarize yourself with documentary hands from the 4th c. BC through the 8th c. AD. Toward that end I'll ask you to read and/or transcribe images of some of the following papyri, sometimes before class, sometimes aloud in class without preparation. Below you will find a chronological list of papyri, which is intended not as an exhaustive or optimally representative sample of hands. It is skewed, in fact, toward the fairly neat and mostly complete. Nevertheless, if you can get your eyes around the following specimens, you will have a good foundation from which to read just about any documentary hand. Citations are followed by links to HGV, DDBDP, and in many cases images. These images are crummy. The ones that we will use in class are better. The online images are for convenience only. |
