I've put these into some sort of order and annotated them a little. My primary purpose in making this page is to keep me from having to remember fifty URLs. If someone else gets a kick out of something they see here, that's even better.

I reserve the right (and will exercise it frequently) to add, delete or change URLs as I find neat things.

It's possible you might find something that would offend you if you followed one of these links. Hey, them's the breaks. Don't come crying to me about it. Go tell your mommy, maybe she'll care. You've been warned.

Triangle/RDU Links

For anybody who is confused, the Triangle is the area in North Carolina bordered by Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Since I'm attending graduate school at Duke University, I'm learning about the area as I go along.

Triangle CitySearch. This site contains a plethora of information on the area, including schedules, ads, maps and more links. There is also a CitySearch site for Portland, which I think is pretty cool.

NC State Parks Home Page. North Carolina has a lot of good places to hike and camp.

Triangle Weather. This is from the Weather Channel. It's a bit graphics-heavy, but it's constantly updated. I'm a little obsessed with the weather.

Science Links

These are a few links I've either found useful in my work or just thought were interesting.

My lab's home page. This page sums up what we work on quite nicely. I'm down at the bottom.

TIGR Microbial Database. TIGR is The Institute for Genomic Research. This is a list of sequenced bacterial genomes, both completed and in progress. Many of these are searchable via the Web.

E. coli Genome Database. Since I work in E. coli, this database is invaluable. I can't consider living without it, which is odd since it didn't exist a month ago.

Protein DataBank. If you do anything at all with proteins and protein structure, this site is essential. Thousands of macromolecular structures.

Emerging Infectious Diseases Home Page. The CDC puts out a quarterly journal in emerging infectious diseases. You can subscribe by e-mail. If you're interested in the subject (termed "eschatalogical epidemiology" by one smart-aleck), this is an invaluable resource.

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Another CDC publication that you can subscribe to by e-mail. Find out how Americans are dying these days.

SETI Institute. The SETI Institute is dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life. They have an excellent site describing their activities. (We're talking about radiotelescope obsevation and things like that, not UFOs and little green men. And if *one more person* sends me something about how alien abductions are real, they're going be praying that the aliens get to them before I do. Of course, since many of them pray that the aliens will take them away anyway, this is less of a threat than I hoped...)

Astrobiology Web. A bit too gee-whiz sometimes, but still has a lot of information and links concerning astrobiology/exobiology, and usually remembers that it's purely a speculative field.

Lunar Institute of Technology. Purporting to be a lunar university, this site contains several discussion forums ("classes") concerning spaceship design, exobiology and first contact.

Space Settlement Links. A list of links concerning space settlement and colonization.

CSICOP. The Center for Scientific Investigation into Claims of the Paranormal. Paladins of rationality standing against the increasing flood of muddleheaded beliefs out there. (Does anyone have any doubt where I sit in this debate?)

Nanotechnology Links. An excellent list of nanotech links.

Artificial Life Online. A good resource for artificial life questions. Includes Zooland, an archive of artificial life software of all shapes and colors.

Beer Links

The Real Beer Page. A site dedicated to craft brewing in the US. Includes links to many brewery pages.

The Brewery. The best compendium of homebrewing information on the Web. There are amazing resources for homebrwers here. Includes the Cat's Meow, a huge archive of beer recipes.

Homebrew Digest. The homebrew-digest is an internet-based mailing list about homebrewing. Ranges from basic to very technical. The list is archived here.

SF Links

Linkoping Archives. A huge database of reviews of science fiction novels. There's more at this site, but I haven't checked it out fully. Can be slow sometimes.

Neveryona. A site dedicated to Samuel Delany and his writings.

Alexandria Digital Library. A relational database of science fiction. You tell it what you like, and it will try to recommend things you haven't read based on people who liked similar things to those you did. A very cool idea, and it works surprisingly well.

Amazon.com Online Bookstore. The famous online bookstore, with "a million titles" and all that. While I'm a huge fan of supporting your local independent bookstore, and think used bookstores are one of the best ideas humans have ever come up with, Amazon.com has its uses. It makes gifts easy, and you can get anything in print.

Sports Links

ESPNet Sportszone. The finest up-to-date sports site on the Web.

Duke Basketball Report. Everything you'd need to know about Duke mens' basketball, and probably more than you'd need to know.

DodgerWatch. I'm a Dodgers fan. I've been one all my life. It's the only thing from LA that I like. This site has all sorts of Dodgers information and commentary.

Complete Panther Page. An very nice site about the Carolina Panthers.

Ultimate Players Association. I think ultimate is the finest game ever created. The fact that I'm an ex-ultimate player doesn't change that one bit.

Triangle Ultimate. The Triangle is one of the hottest areas for ultimate in the country. This site has information on college teams, summer league, winter league (one of the best in the country) and pickup games.

Forest Hills Park Ultimate. Pickup ultimate in Durham, NC.

Music Links

Hyperreal. A huge archive of information on electronic music, including (but in no way limited to) Detroit techno, idm, trip hop and ambient. Also has a lot of information on rave culture.

AOAIOXXYSZ. A large collection of techno reviews, discographies and essays.

New Jack Hip Hop. The site of the New Jack Hip Hop Awards, annual awards voted on by net readers. Also contains the most intelligent and well-written reviews of hip hop (or any other genre) I've ever read.

Submerge. A large distribution company for Detroit techno. Of Detroit, by Detroit and for Detroit. Excellent prices, fast and friendly service and a fiercely principled philosophy.

Ear/Rational Music. One of the best Internet mail order music businesses. Good selection of indie-pop, industrial, techno and ambient. Very friendly.

Modern Music. Specializing in idm.

Drop Beat Records. A good selection of trip hop and techno. Good service.

Sonic Groove. Excellent selection of hard-to-find techno.

CDNow. Cheap mainstream mail order. Has a good world music section.
