I live in Beaufort, North Carolina, a small historic town on the Atlantic coast, near Cape Lookout (at the southernmost end of the 'Outer Banks'). It's a good place to be with the ocean. Rachel Carson thought so, too - she came to the beaches and marshes to medidate on ocean wilderness and to research her first book "Under the Sea-Wind". Out my office window, I look every day upon an island reserve named after her.

Like Carson, I have found Beaufort a good place to think and reflect. And it's been a good place to focus on community.

Apart from my research, I enjoy getting on, in, or around the water in different ways. A little kayaking, sailing, diving, surfing, beach walking.

Other enjoyments: cooking, gardening, traveling (esp in Latin America), birding, music, astronomy, activism (not so much an enjoyment as a civic obligation we should all engage in).
