| Yoga
is for Everyone!
The
oldest drawings and writings tell us that yoga was practiced
around 5,000 years ago, and, considering its history and
popularity today, it's sure to be around for a long time to
come. Yoga means the union of the self with the universe. To be
more elaborate, yoga is the practice of integrating the mind and
body to create a greater connection with your inner nature,
thereby bringing balance to your life and realizing your potential for
energy, relaxation, and good health. This mind, body &
spirit connection helps you integrate with the universal energy
around you.
There are many facets of yoga practice. The most
well known in western culture is hatha yoga, which is the
physical practice of yoga. There are also facets of yoga that
focus on the mind, spirit, breath, lifestyle and relationships.
A highly regarded resource for learning about all the facets of
yoga are the
Yoga Sutras, written in
loose form over 4,000 years ago and assembled into one text by
the Indian sage, Patanjali, some 2,000 years ago. The ancient
aphorisms found in the Yoga Sutras can still be applied today.
Hatha yoga is the way many people are introduced to yoga.
Although there are many standard practices in hatha yoga, there
are several
styles
to choose from. Newcomers to yoga should try different styles
and teachers to find a practice that is right for them.
