HMML Information

The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library represents the largest and most
comprehensive effort to preserve on microfilm the contents of medieval
manuscripts held in libraries and archives abroad. Since its founding in
1965, the Library has sent teams of researchers and technicians to film
more than 25 million pages from over 90,000 volumes in libraries and
archives throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The Library
is committed to making these manuscripts (and the study of their contents
and the cultures that produce them) available and understandable to
scholars, teachers, students, and the general public.

HMML Filming Projects

HMML has conducted filming projects in the following countries:
Austria - 32,031 manuscripts (including the Austrian National Library)
Germany - 10,662 manuscripts
Ethiopia - 7,636 manuscripts
Portugal - 2,081 manuscripts
Spain - 6,206 manuscripts
Malta - 15,355 archival items from the National Library in Valletta and
the Cathedral Museum in Mdina
Switzerland - 81 manuscripts
Sweden - approximately 1,000 manuscripts planned for filming

HMML's comprehensive filming projects make microfilm copies of all the
manuscripts in a library or archive, not just of a few select treasures.

HMML has purchased approximately 8,000 published microfilms of manuscripts
from more than twenty-three other countries.

Supporting Collections

HMML's supporting collections facilitate specialized research in monastic,
liturgical, and church history. Many more secular subjects of the medieval
period are covered as well. In addition, Study Centers have been
established for HMML's three main collections -- Austria and Germany,
Ethiopia, and Malta -- to aid and promote research of these countries.

HMML houses a large collection of manuscript catalogues in addition to its
own catalogues and handlists. The Library also has microfilmed unpublished
local finding aids, including handwritten catalogues. Its collection of
published catalog ues and manuscript facsimiles are accessible via PALS,
the electronic on-line catalogue of Alcuin Library, Saint John's
University.

Inquiries

Inquiries about the collection may be made over the phone, by writing, or
by e-mail. HMML has an extensive website that contains information about
its collections and programs. The library also has published catalogues
