Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii)

Breeding in the high arctic, Cackling Geese are fairly rare but apparently regular in winter in North Carolina. They are often found associating with Snow Geese rather than Canada Geese.

Ricky Davis snapped this photo of a bird that was a state or life bird for many folks in the Carolinas, and this is exactly the look many of us got of this bird! Note the cute little stubby-billed flat head of the Cackler poking up in the lower middle portion of the photo.
