Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)

Common along the NC coast and at lakes in the piedmont.
Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)

Cormorants often hold their wings out to dry off the feathers and for thermoregulation.

Anhingas superficially resemble cormorants, but note the cormorants have more orange in their faces, hooked beaks, and shorter tails.
