Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

Uncommon statewide along the edges of streams, ponds, swamps, etc. Green Herons are solitary nesters and do not nest in rookeries like many other species of herons.

This Green Heron nested in a buttonbush thicket in a canal next to agricultural fields.

Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

When Mama Green Heron noticed us, she quietly slipped off the nest into the water, revealing 3 light blue eggs and one freshly hatched nestling! We quickly snapped a couple of photos and then left the area so she could return to her motherly duties.
