Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)

A common wintering duck in North Carolina, Ring-necked Ducks breed across northern North America and down the Rockies.

Distinctive diving duck with a peaked head, ringed bill, and white shoulder stripe. The ring around the neck is difficult to see in the field, however.
