Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis)

Common (coastal) to uncommon (mountains) statewide from fall through spring in fields, dunes, and other open, grassy habitats. Possibly a few individuals may be breeding in the northern mountains in NC, but no nests have been found.

Ipswich Sparrorws breed in Nova Scotia and winter on beaches along the east coast. They are relatively large and pale compared to other eastern wintering Savannah Sparrows.
