Aaron's Skipper (Poanes aaroni)

Rare to locally uncommon in brackish marshes along the northern coast of NC from Currituck Co. south to Hyde Co. Identification can be tricky, but Aaron's Skipper tends to be smaller than Broad-winged Skipper and Palatka Skipper, with which they fly. Contrary to what some of the field guides say, the ray in the hindwing may or may not extend to the edge of the wing. Aaron's Skippers vary from fairly dull tan/brown ground color to a somewhat richer brown ground color, and they usually show a contrasting orange forewing when viewed from below.
