Red-banded Hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops)

Common and widespread in NC, this species has at least two broods and generally can be found from springtime well into autumn. Note the quite variable ground color, from slate gray to tan to brown.

Rarely perched with their wings open, Red-banded Hairstreaks have a flash of blue on the upper surfaces of the wings.
