Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia)

Generally common statewide, although less common in the western part of NC, this species may be seen from February all year long into December in some years. "Var-Frits", as we often call them in the field, are commonly found in gardens, vacant lots, power lines, roadsides, etc.

This butterfly was flying in the woods along the edge of Falls Lake with wind chills in the 30s and an air temperature of 43 deg. F under sunny skies.
