Jeff's Quebec Trip 2005

In early Aug 2005, I flew into Montreal, rented an SUV, and drove about a hundred miles North to the small town of St.-Michel-des-Saints at the bottom of Lake Tareau and near a couple of wildlife reserves.
It was a challenge finding a reasonably priced motel online where they spoke English, but then I found The Old Sawmill Motel. This corner room was mine.
St.-Michel is the ATV & snowmobile capital of North America . . .
Very basic, but functinally home sweet home for a couple of nights
Found a nice hiking trail at St.-Michel
The trail climbed rapidly for a great view of Lake Tareau (Toro) at St.-Michel-des-Saints
The lake was formed by damming the Matawin River
Then I went exploring in the refuge about a half-hour away. This is where I found many of my butterflies of the trip
My artistic shot of beached boats on a lake at Reserva Faunique Mastigouche
I love these northern wetlands
Northern bog
Some old friends from Boreal Flora (Cornus canadensis, Clintonia borealis, etc.)
An Atlantis Fritillary (larger) and a Silver-bordered Fritillary (smaller) share some JoePye Weed. Click here for the rest of my butterfly photos from this trip
Appropriately, Canada Darners were very common up here
The next day (Saturday), on the way back to Montreal, I stopped at Sept-Chutes Regional Park where I heard & saw a calling Common Loon here on Lake Remi
Lakeshore vista
Stream at Sept-Chutes
On Sunday, I took an official Ecological Society of America field trip to Mer Bleue Bog
Hiking a boardwalk around the public portion of the bog
The bog
Our field trip then went to a closed section of the bog where the most of the research is ongoing
Ecosystem exchange chambers at Mer Bleue
These chambers measure CO2 flux
Back in Montreal, I explored the area around the hotel & convention center. This art museum plaza was across from the Hyatt.
The pool at the Hyatt; looking over the railing yielded the photo above
Chinatown in Montreal, a couple blocks from the Hyatt and the conference center
The streets were always bustling with people, whether it was 1pm or 1am! This is St. Catherine Street a couple blocks from the Hyatt, where you could find nice restaurants, nice shops, along with adult entertainment establishments
Interesting selection of t-shirts for sale
Montreal was a great mix of old and modern architecture
Hanging out at the church steps
Oh yeah, the Dead Kennedys live!
City Hall in Old Montreal
Plaza in front of City Hall in Old Montreal
Restaurants galore line the plaza
We had beautiful weather all week until the very last day when I decided to take all my city pictures. Even in the rain, the streets were bustling with activity. Great trip; can't wait to go back!
