Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus)

This species complex is fairly rare and is thought to contain 2 or more valid species based on DNA studies. Found in scattered mountain locations from West Virginia to Georgia, Green Salamanders hide in moist narrow crevices in rock outcrops, especially in the winter, but are also occasionally found in trees. Except for the photo of the salamanders inside the crack (which was taken 29 April 2004 at the same location), all of the photos below are of the same individual and were taken 2 May 04 in Henderson Co., NC.
Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus) In the winter, Green Salamanders congregate in moist rock outcrop crevices.
Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus) Note the very flattened, nearly transparent webbed toes for adhering to the rocks.
Unfortunately, my flash washed out many of the yellowish-green patches on some of the photos.
