These flies have distinctive red thighs while the rest of the insect is mostly black.

Larvae (maggots) of these flies reportedly feed on decaying plant material.

There are a handful of species of Bibio in NC. David Stephan reports that others have different color combinations and some fairly extreme sexual dimorphism respect to the relative size of the head/eyes.
