Philosophy Statement

Welcome to the portfolio of work from my MAT program.  Hopefully you will find that this website clearly illustrates the work I have done and my growth as a teacher over the past year.  Enjoy!

For me, the Duke MAT program started in July of 2004.  I, along with all of the other MAT students for the coming year, took several courses over the summer to prepare us for student teaching in the fall.  Some of the final work from those classes can be viewed by following the links to the left.

In August, I began student teaching at Northern High School with Sue Eldon.  During the fall semester our goal as MAT students was to teach at least one class at least 50% of the time.  With Sue I taught a range of classes from Physical Science, to Physics and Honors Physics, to AP Physics.

During the fall our two main student teaching projects were to complete a full unit plan for at least one of the units we taught as well as to complete an IEP Project.

In addition to the student teaching, I took two courses Duke:

General Relativity & Introduction to Statistics.

During the spring semester, my student teaching assignment was at Jordan High School with Shannon McGinnis.  I taught two courses for Shannon, two sections of Honors Integrated Math III, and one section of Inclusion Geometry.  I taught Integrated Math from the middle of January until Spring Break and Geometry for about six weeks from early February until mid-March.

We focused on two main areas in our MAT seminars during the spring semester: ESL classes and parental contact.  While we did not complete a formal project on either of these topics, I learned a lot in both of these areas.

In addition to my student teaching assignment, I took two courses at Duke: Astronomy and The Dynamic Earth.

I have learned and grown a lot throughout the past year.  I hope that is clear from the work presented on this site.  I am excited start my career as a teacher and see what lies in store for me!
