I. Knowledge and Skills

Comments: (a) Kate attempts to connect current content to prior content,
helps students see the interconnections and relationships and researches
various sources for information in preparation for class.
(b) Kate has a good fundamental grasp of the content, and realizes
when she needs to review content herself before teaching it.
II. Curriculum and Lesson Planning
a. Develops innovative curriculum units 1
b. Creates well-structured, written lesson plans 1
Comments: (a) Develps multiple activities and interesting methods with
a variety of ways for students to learn. Willing to try new ideas
and modify them as needed.
(b) Sequences lessons to help students develop ideas over time and
reinforces concepts built into the lesson.
III. Teaching
a. Implements well structured lesson plans 2
b. Provides well-paced instruction 3
c. Involves students in active classroom participation 1
d. Utilizes effective classroom management procedures 3
e. Flexible and adaptable - able to 'think on feet' 2

Comments: Implementation generally effective, although occasional difficulty
with pacing and adjusting to student reactions to lesson.
Actively involves students regularly in lesson. Management of
class generally OK with some uncertainty or hesitation of how to react
in a few situations, which is normal for first or second year teacher.
IV. Evaluation
a. Employs a variety of assessment strategies appropriate to the range of students in the class 1
b. Applies results of evaluation for diagnostic purposes 2
Comments: Multiple assessments (written, oral, mathematical, in groups,
individual) are used regularly. Uses evaluations to plan subsequent
lessons but occasionally unsure how to use results ? a very understandable
sense of "how to help students understand this."
V. Learning Enviornment
a. Works towards creating a supportivecommunity of learners 2
b. Provides an enriching and stimulating learning environment 1
Comments: (a) Uses lab groups and other groupings of students in various
activities. Sometimes responds to questions from
students too quickly instead of nudging them to help each other.
(b) Multiple activities are used regularly.

b. Adapts or changes teaching strategies based on effectiveness 2

d. Inquires and researches new subject matter and pedagogical approaches 2
Comments: Kate is very aware of her performance and generally good at identifying strong and weak points. She continually seeks input on her performance with a view to trying to improve. She attempts to adapt teaching strategies and pedagogical approaches as needed, sometimes with success and sometimes is stymied. Experience will expand her repertoire.
VII. Professional Relations and Collegiality

Comments: Has gone to athletic events. Attended a statewide professional
conference and assisted with a presentation. Positive outlook and
pleasant to work with ? respects colleagues and students. Does take
initiative improving classroom instruction but is understandably hesitant
to do too much with another person's classroom.
According to the Bulletin of Duke University: The Graduate School: "Grades in the Graduate School are as follows: E, G, S, F and I. E (excellent) is the highest mark; G (good) and S (satisfactory) are the remaining passing marks: F (failing) is an unsatisfactory grade; and I (incomplete) indicates that some portion of the student's work is lacking, for an acceptable reason, at the time the grades are reported.

Positive outlook, competent knowledge base, sincere desire to help students
learn, able and willing to learn from experience, reliable and responsible.
Kate has a strong foundation to build upon to become an exceptional teacher,
and will take full advantage of upcoming classroom experience to completely
develop that potential.
