Objectives

  1. Summarize the conflict between King Philip of France and Pope Boniface VIII.
  2. Analyze the effects of the Babylonian Captivity and Great Schism on the power of the Church.
  3. State the positions of the early reformers in Europe.
  4. Anticipate the upcoming Reformation and its implications for a changing Europe.

Anticipatory Set

On the overhead place a list of eight true/false questions reviewing the church. Students should answer the questions in their notebook.

Methodology

  1. Review the answers to the journal entry as a way of assessing what students have learned about the church thus far.
  2. Lecture-discussion on the challenges to church power, the Babylonian Captivity, and the Great Schism.
  3. Use an overhead image of a reformation woodcut, comparing Christ to the pope (depicted as Antichrist). Question the class about the meaning of this image, the creatorÕs purpose in drawing it, where it might be published, and whom it would be directed to.
  4. Assign the class two political cartoons. One should be about the Church; the other could be about anything during the Middle Ages that we have covered, as a preparation for review.
  5. Towards the end of class pass out the Middle Ages vocabulary sheets. Students should finish these as a review for the test.
