On the road: Of all the meals we ate on the trip, I think my favorite was New Year's Day brunch at the 99er on Highway 99 (the Sea-to-Sky Highway), with the sort of ambience that made it easy to picture Mulder and Scully conversing across the table, as they did on one episode of "The X-Files."

On the drive north from Vancouver to Whistler, we stopped to admire spectacular Shannon Falls.

The blue triangle of Hostelling International was a welcome sight at the end of our journey north.

"Easier" was what we stuck to during our two days' skiing at Whistler. Amelia and I especially enjoyed Blackcomb's "Green Line." Nora did some more challenging blue runs, while Jen took on the greatest challenge of all: finding bargains at the local shops.

Toney Whistler charmed even Ken's socialist heart with its newly minted quaintness.
