Steps to Success

You will maximize your chances of finding that prime business opportunity if you follow these five steps -- recommended by Dr. Maskel for students seeking business jobs or internships.

1Read the Career Handbook: Read the Career Handbook: Pick up your free copy of the new CDC Career Handbook. The handbook provides a general introduction to CDC resources, programs, and personnel. Carefully reading the section about resumés will help you prepare your first or next resume. Copies are available at the CDC.
2Explore the CDC web site and the Business Careers Page: Explore the CDC web site and the Business Careers Page: A large part of your job search will take place using computer and Internet resources. Explore the CDC's World Wide Web (WWW) home page -- the hub of all job search activity at Duke. Located on the web site, the Business Careers Page will provide you with essential search information and Internet resources. You may access the web site on any computer connected to the Internet (http://cdc.stuaff.duke.edu).
3Visit the CDC J.O.B. room and Library: In the J.O.B. room, you should explore the various sections relating to Business and internships as well as On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) resources. In the CDC Library, you should explore the variety of books, directories, newspapers, and periodicals available to assist you in your search for industry and company information.
4Prepare a resumé: Prepare a draft of your resumé and take it to the CDC any weekday afternoon between 1 and 5 pm. Without an appointment, you may have your resumé critiqued by a member of the CDC professional staff. OR, you may take your resumé along if you make an appointment to meet with Dr. Maskel.
5Make an appointment to meet with Dr. Maskel: Once you have completed Steps 1-4, you may wish to meet with Dr. Maskel to ask questions and discuss issues that are specific to your personal job search and career interests. Becoming familiar in advance with CDC resources and preparing an updated resume will facilitate your meeting with at the CDC.
