The College Football Controversy: BCS vs. Playoffs

Hatewatch

Below is a list of sites relating to the college football postseason contreversy that I think you should stay away from and the reasons why these sites deserve such to be avoided.

Ravenwood's Universe- This site makes some legitimate points about the BCS's shortcomings last year, but the author completely ignores anything the BCS has done correctly. This site is extremely bias and if all anti-BCS activists shared his ideas it would only contribute to the problem that college football faces today.

NFL Draft Blitz - The author of this article has a valid point; that the BCS is still a good system despite the large amount of complaints. His biggest flaw comes when he proposes a four-team playoff system that would fail to fix one of the major problems of the BCS. A four team playoff would not allow smaller schools any better of a chance to make it to the national championship because they would have to be ranked as one of the top four teams in the nation according to the BCS.

Football Outsiders- The author here brings up some very interesting ideas for adaptations of the current BCS system, but his shortcomings begin when he completely disregards any form of a playoff system. Once again, the author's only solution in the article does not solve the problem of the non-BCS conference schools becuase it only allows two of the many mid-major schools to get a chance at a BCS bowl game.

Decatur Daily- In this article the author maintains that a payoff system would simply cheapen the regular season of college football too much to be worthwhile. He uses college basketball as an example of how a playoff postseason lessens the excitement of the regular season. What the author fails to realize is that the college basketball regular season is as vibrant as ever. Even though everyone knows the good teams will make the tournament at the end of the season, they still cheer their hearts out at all the big regular season games because of conference titles, passionate rivalries, and the desire to just see your team win a game regardless of its long-term importance.

Mindspring.com- Once again the authoe here is against a playoff system because of the potentially harmfull effect it would have on the regular season. Once again, however, the author has some major flaws in his logic. He brings up reasons why the current BCS is a good system and the harmful effects a playoff-style posstseason would have, but he fails to back up his points with any kind of facts or casual logic.
