There was once a time when women could not work. A time when a woman could not have or keep her own property. A time when a woman could not have her own money. A time when a man was told to beat his wife regularly to show his place as master of his home. A time when a woman could not vote. A time when a woman married whom she was told to marry, not whom she wanted to marry. A time when a husband could put his wife in an asylum just because he found her too much trouble. A time where a woman who looked different would be called a witch. A time when a woman was not allowed to learn to read. A time when a woman was not allowed to attend a college. A time when a woman could not divorce a man who beat her, who harmed her children. A time when a woman could not speak her truth. A time when no one cared for the tears of the wounded woman. A time when woman was property. A time when a woman was thought vile and evil by nature. A time when no female face of God was ever spoken of. These times were not changed because we became more civilized, more enlightened. These times changed because there was a time when women fought, cried, gave their lives and made ultimate sacrifices to change those times. Those times are still here, those fights still fought, those freedoms still incomplete. This is not a religious fight, this is a human fight. This is a fight to allow the same dignity, the same rights, the same freedoms to choose for all.
May we never take steps backward, only steps forward. May we all find a
way to look beyond the face, the body, the color,
the religion and see the human that is in us all. And may we never see
a time again like we have seen before. |
