Hyperizons
Clippings, Notices, Etc.

Hyperizons has been reviewed and/or cited favorably in a number of print and online publications, in places ranging from general audience periodicals such as the Wall Street Journal and Entertainment Weekly to academic or special interest journals such as Intelligent Agent. It was named GNN's Best of the Net Winner, 1995, for Literature (Amateur Division) and is rated by Magellan as a 4-Star site. In addition, I have been interviewed about hypertext fiction by a number of journalists. Here, for the very interested, the very bored, people with money to send me, and my next of kin, is a recap of places I know I've been mentioned.

Articles

Blanton, John. "A Novel Medium." In The Wall Street Journal, Thursday, March 28, 1996, special section on Entertainment and Technology, p. R10.
Cites Hyperizons as "among the more exhaustive on-line bibliographies of hypertext fiction."

"Burning Down the House: The Challenges of Building Interactive Narratives, Part 2." In Intelligent Agent: Newsletter on the Use of Interactive Media and Technology in Arts and Education, Vol. 1, No. 5, September, 1996, p. 43. [s.n.]. Editor in Chief, Christianne Paul.
Describes Hyperizons as "an excellent gateway to interactive narratives and hyperfictions on the Web."

Burr, Ty. "Getting Lit." Sidebar article to "Interactive Entertainment." (also by Burr). In Entertainment Weekly, October 11, 1996, p. ?.
Cites Hyperizons as "a central Web source" for hypertext fiction.

Awards and Ratings

GNN Best of the Net Winner, 1995, Literature, Amateur Division.
Once upon a time there was a company named GNN (Global Network Navigator) that for a couple of years held a banquet in San Francisco and gave out awards for the best Web sites in various categories. Near the end of 1995 they named Hyperizons as the best Literature Site, Amateur (read "unpaid") Division and even sent me a trophy. The Mississippi Review was the Professional Division winner, so I felt I was in good company at least. This list of awards used to be online, but then GNN was reabsorbed into AOL and the list of awardees morphed into Web Crawler Select, leaving me here with my stranded icon. The remains of the original citation, which can be read here, cites Hyperizons as being "chock full of resources on postmodern fiction and its computerized cousin, hypertext fiction." As far as I can recall it's the first time anyone has accused me or my work of being "chock full" of anything besides A) ice cream; and B) smartass remarks.
Magellan Internet Guide 4-Star Site (highest rating).
Magellan's citation is liberally sprinkled with phrases such as "authoritative guide," "vast", and "impressive resource." There is no connection between The McKinley Group and me. Honest.
Hmm. Someone wrote me in October, 1996, to let me know this British Internet magazine had awarded me their prestigious 5 star award. He also sent along the nice icon to the left. But the issue isn't online and I haven't been able to get a paper copy yet, so I have no idea what they said about me. At their Web site they appear to be (as of Feb. 1, 1997) setting up a page of their "Five Star Greats of All Time," in which Hyperizons will presumably appear. Until then, well, I really didn't make this up.

Interviews

[NEW] Graieb, Carlos. "Ficao em hipertexto revoluciona imaginacao." In O Estado de Sao Paulo, March, 1996. [exact date and page number unknown]
This article, published in one of Brazil's largest newspapers, is more detailed and informed than most newspaper articles on this subject. Graieb discusses works on the Web as well as those published by Eastgate and interviews Michael Joyce, Mark Bernstein, and me. He also discusses a couple of works in Portuguese, including O Terceiro milenio (The Third Millenium) by Renato Pompeu (to whom many thanks for providing me with a copy of the article and a translation). Notes Hyperizons as one of the best listings on the Web. (7/23/97)

Hoover, Aaron. "Point and Click Fiction." In The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun, Wednesday, November 8, 1995, p. D1.
Briefly quotes me out of context and misspells my name. Nice work if you can get it.
