How Did I Get Here?

"This realization brought me to the verge of hypertext."

This is only an aside, not a new path. It's interesting to note that my brief essay on the history of "Holier Than Thou" is not a unique sort of thing, but a member of what seems to be a developing mini-genre that I currently dub "how-did-I-end-up-in-hypertext?" For the time being writers feel compelled to explain themselves and how they've wandered away from print or chose to leave it. Other members of this group include Michael Joyce's "What I Really Wanted to Do I Thought," Robert Kendall's "Writing for the New Millennium: The Birth of Electronic Literature," and Charles Deemer's "What is Hypertext?." These are just some of the better known examples--I've seen others at people's personal Web sites.
