My name is Michael Spencer Young. I am an 18 year-old freshman at Duke University and I am originally from Long Island, New York. I am a midfielder on the Varsity Lacrosse team at Duke and I plan to go into business upon graduating college. I was first exposed to the conflicts surounding abortion while I was at Chaminade High School where the secular faculty stressed the importance of being pro-life. We were shown videos of actual abortions, testimonies of women who have had abortions, and clips from various marches and protests both for and against abortions. In the end, all that was clear to me was that neither side was 100 percent correct in their views, and that even if they were, the controversy would never cease to exist at the rate it is going today. In my writing class, taught by Dr. Bradley Hammer here at Duke, we have been asked to create a website that allows its readers to see both sides of the binary in order to help them create their own perspective on the conflict. My hope for the future is that society sees that common ground on the issue of abortion is not so far out of reach. We just have to understand what it is we are really fighting for.
