Materials and Supplies
- Acetone
- A multipurpose solvent for use in cleaning, etc. That which
is available from chemical supply houses such as VWR is just
too purified (and expensive) for our uses, so we buy from Douglas
& Sturgess, Inc., at a rate of $30.00 per 5 gallon container.

- Acrylic Paints
- For use in painting casts. Available in various sized tubes
from Amsterdam Arts, Utrecht Art Supply, or any local arts supply
store.

- Adhesives
- see epoxy, cyanoacrylate, or glyptal.

- Air Compressors
- For on-demand, high pressure air, a compressed air tank system
is needed. The motor runs only on demand, so the noise level
is kept down, and the sir supply is pulse-free, allowing for
finer control of the air stream. A large variety is available
from Granger for between $150 and $2000.

- Alcohol

- Get type II or Normal Set, as you will often need all the

- For weighing plasters, plastics, and elastomers. Ohaus®
makes an affordable, magnetically damped balance with a fixed
stainless steel weighing plate. Available from Cole-Palmer for
$112.00. Item # G-01012-00.

- For use in molding preparation. Available from Douglas &
Sturgess in 1 lb blocks. Filtered is $8.00 per block and bleached

off of counters. Terry cloth towels and old t-shirts work well.

- Coecal Buff Plaster
- For highest quality casts use this with a gypsum hardener.
Sold in 25 pound boxes for about $20.00. Made by G.C. America,
available from Zahn Dental Supply.

- For cast storage and mold preparation. Available from the
medical section of drug and thrift stores.

- Cotton Tipped Applicators
- Available in boxes of 1000 non-sterile applicators in either
the 3-inch or 6-inch length for $5.99 per box from Henry Schein
Inc. Item #100-6015.

- CutterSil®
Light
- Light body silicone base precision impression material. Good
for quick, one- or two-cast molds. High detail-good for teeth.
Also works well as a protective rubber coating for teeth while
preparing specimen with airbrasive apparatus. Order from Zahn
Dental Supply. It will cost about$18.00 per 140ml of rubber,
plus $16.00 for 25ml of hardener, which will last for several
tubes.

- Cyanoacrylate
- "Krazy Glue". For most small, permanent cast repairs.
Available from any local grocery or thrift store or from Ace
Hardware.

- Dental Tools
- Available from any Zahn Dental Supply or from Douglas &
Sturgess, for between $6.00 and $18.00 each. Composite instruments,
scalers, carvers, and Ward tools are all useful in the molding
and casting lab.

- Disposable Aprons
- Very useful in keeping you relatively clean in the dirty
and often hostile environment typical of a casting and molding
lab.

- Disposable Brushes
- Used for mixing paints and for applying molding rubber to
specimens. "Acid brushes" are a good choice due to
their unbeatably low price. These are available in bulk from
Atlas Welding Supply, Inc., for $15.95 per gross (about $.11
each) or $.20 each singly.

Monoject Syringe
- Used often in both molding and casting. The best syringes
for the job are the Monoject EIM #412 12 cc disposables with
a curved, tapered tip. Available from Henry Schein, Inc., for
$25.75 per box of 50 syringes. Item # 194-1135.

Vinyl or Latex Gloves
- Available in boxes of 100 from any local medical supply house,
or from Zahn Dental Supply or Henry Schein, Inc. for about $5.00
to $9.00 for a box of 100. Available in small, medium, and large;
sometimes in split sizes.

- For sanding, drilling, polishing, etc.
Available in a variety of shapes and sizes from Granger., or
Ace Hardware.

labels
- For labeling set-up blocks, etc. Available from Ace Hardware,
for about $1.50 for 1/2 inch widths and $1 for 3/8 inch widths.

- Epoxy
cements
- For permanent gluing. Available in 1oz double syringes from
Ace Berkeley Hardware. The 5-minute epoxy works well for most
jobs.

- Flexiboles
- For pouring plaster. Dried plaster justs pops out when the
bowl is flexed. Makes for easy clean up. Available from Zahn
Dental Supply, or Henry Schein, Inc. Small (150 cc) costs $3.59,
medium (350 cc) costs $3.99, large (600 cc) costs $5.29, and
extra large (850 cc) costs $5.99.

- Foam
for cast storage
- Available from a number of foam and mattress retailers. The
one we have used is Famous Foam Factory. They will precut the
foam to fit any drawer size. Foam 2 inches thick works for most
purposes.

- Gauze
- Used for mold reinforcement. The Kling Sof-Gauze bandage
by Johnson & Johnson works well because it conforms to surface
features. Available from the medical section of any drug or thrift
store, or from Henry Schein, Inc., for $5.99 for 12 rolls of
2 inch wide gauze.

- Glassware
- see beaker, ehrlenmeyer flask, graduated cylinder, or watch
glass.

Drying Rack
- For drying glassware and keeping clean glassware within easy
reach and out of harm's way. A variety of wall mounted and countertop
models are available from Cole-Palmer for $70 to $190.

- Has numerous paleontological applications. Available in red
and clear forms in quart and gallon containers from Beck Electric
Supply. Quarts cost about $12 and gallons cost about $43.

- For use in mixing mold wetting agents.

Hardener
- For casting with high-quality dental plasters such as Coecal.
The best buy seems to be Buffalo® Stalite Special Liquid
Solution at $19.00 per gallon. Whip Mix also makes a very good
Gypsum Hardener for slightly more, $22.00 per gallon. Available
from Zahn Dental Supply or Henry Schein, Inc.

B-11
- A hard, dense, sculptable, inexpensive grey plaster used
for jacketing molds and making blocks. Available from cement
suppliers such as RMC Lonestar Industries, for about $25 for
a 100 lb sack.

FGR-95
- A hard, fiberglass-compatable white plaster useful in lay-up
applications such as plaques or other two-dimensional casts when
lightness and a degree of flexibility are needed. Best when mixed
with water. Manufactured by U.S. Gypsum and available from cement
suppliers such as RMC Lonestar Industries or from Douglas &
Sturgess for about $4.50 for a 10 lb bag or about $25.00 for
a 100 lb sack.

- For jacketing molds and for use wherever a soft, non-detailed
inexpensive plaster is needed. Available from Douglas & Sturgess,

- Plastilina Modeling Clay
- For set-up blocks and other molding applications. Order gray
green, white, or ivory for about $6.00 per 5 lb. block. Do not
order dark green or clown green! Order from Leisure Crafts.
- Plexiglas
- Polyethylene Wrap
- For sealing set-up blocks against dust, water, and other
atmospheric contaminants. Available in brand names such as "Cling
Wrap" or "Saran Wrap" from a variety of local
grocery stores.
- Putty Knives
- For cleaning lab and cutting plastilina. Available in a variety
of sizes and shapes from Ace Hardware, or any local hardware
store for $2 - $10 apiece.
- Roller, small
- Used for fine rolling on set-up blocks. Buy what is called
a wall paper roller from a local hardware store such as Ace Hardware.
Less than $10.00.
- Rolling Pin
- For rolling out plastilina. The heavy, marble ones work best.
Available from local grocery, thrift, and kitchen stores, or
Ace Hardware.
- Rubber Straps
- For banding molds closed after casting. Large, thick rubber
bands, or strips of rubber cut from old bicycle tubes work well.
- Sandpaper
- Available from any local lumber or hardware store such as
Ace Hardware, in a variety of grades of coarseness. The waterproofed
variety will find the most applications in the casting and molding
lab.
- Silastic® RTV type E
- Manufactured by Dow Corning, but available from a local distributor,
K.R. Anderson Co., Inc., for $135.36 per "kit", plus
tax and shipping. A "kit" consists of a 9.9 lb drum
of rubber and a 1 lb can of liquid catalyst. Additional catalyst
is available for $22.00 per pint.
- Silastic® 732 RTV adhesive sealant
- For temporary repairs of Silastic molds. Available in 3oz
and 4.7oz tubes from K.R. Anderson Co. for $6.00 per 3oz tube
and $8.00 per 4.7oz tube.
- Spatulas, metal
- Used for mixing plastics, plasters, and molding compounds.
Available from Zahn Dental Supply for between $6.00 and $18.00
apiece.
- Spice Rack
- for organizing and storing pigments using in painting casts
- Talcum Powder
- We use Johnson's baby powder, buy any powdered talc will
do. Available from local grocery and discount stores, or Campus
Store, for about $1.50 per 9 oz bottle.
- Toilet Paper
- Available in bulk from A.C. Paper & Supply. One-ply is
the cheapest for packing purposes. The product code for the paper
we now use is 373-00120 and costs about $54 per case of 96 rolls.
The minimum total order is $75.00.
- Tongue Depressors
- Available from any local dental supply house or from Henry
Schein, Inc. Sold in packages of 500 non-sterile depressors.
They cost $6.49 per box of 500. Item # 100-2416.
- Toothbrushes
- For general purpose cleaning. Buy a variety of stiffnesses.
Available at local grocery and thrift stores, or in bulk at very
good prices from Henry Schein, Inc. Bulk prices average $9.00
for 12 toothbrushes.
- Trash bags
- Buy the 33 gal size. Available from any local grocery store.
- Trichloroethane
- We use 1.1.1 trichloroethane as a solvent for Vaseline. Buy
in pint jars from Shape Products Co., (Catalog #8240-1) 1 pint

- Vacuum Jar
- For use in de-airing molding rubbers.
- Vacuum Jar Grease
- For sealing vacuum chamber. Do not use Vaseline! Available
from K.R. Anderson Co., for $9.35 per 5.3 oz tube.
- Vacuum Pump
- For use in de-airing molding rubber.
- Vacuum Pump Oil
- We use Marvac brand #RO-1000. Available from Marvac Scientific
Manufacturing Co.
- Vacuum Pump Repair Kit
- Vacuum pumps may require servicing every few years, and it
can be much cheaper and faster to order the repair kit and follow
the instructions for doing it yourself. Kits are available from
Marvac Scientific Manufacturing Co. for about $___.
- Vaseline
- For use as a separating agent. Can be bought inexpensively
at any local grocery or drug store, such as Campus Store.

- To cover beakers and reduce evaporation and contamination.

- For the vacuum mixer. Can be bought directly from Whip Mix

A variety of blade shapes, handles, and accessories are available
for various applications. Prices vary.
- Zip-Lock Bags
- Larger and sandwich-sized bags can be bought at any local
grocery or thrift store. Smaller and odd-sized bags can be purchased
through Chiswick, Inc. There is a minimum purchase, so be prepared
to order hundreds or thousands of bags.
