Monica W. Belle

My creativity, my extensive knowledge of web design and database development, and my recently completed education are preparing me for a career as a web developer and database administrator.

As a graduate from Duke University with a degree in Computer Science, I have the skills and technical knowledge to fulfill the requirements for this type of career, which includes data management, Java and C++ Programming, software design, object-oriented design as well as operating systems. I have also taken the initiative to further my education by completing the Oracle 8i Database Administrator Certification Program at the Johns Hopkins Computer Career Institute.

Before I formally entered the Computer Science program at Duke, I had three years of web design and development experience as a Universities Space Research Association (USRA) Computer Consultant at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. My responsibilities included the design and maintenance of a professional web page for an astrophysicist, the creation of over 70 FORTRAN programs that allowed my employer to easily formulate and analyze data, as well as several other web projects.

The experience and tools I learned at NASA prepared me for a position as a technical web consultant with a Duke University history professor. For two and a half years I have been working with a history professor to design and implement a web site, the Durham Digital Web Project that includes an interactive 1880 Census Map, primary historical information, and a database of Census information using XML. Throughout this project, I have become more familiar with graphic design, desktop publishing, the scanning of primary documents and images, as well as learning new web authoring tools such as Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage.

Over the past six years my professional experience has developed through my work at NASA, and my role as a designer and programmer of an educational web project, providing me with the necessary skills and knowledge to be a successful web developer. These skills include the ability to:

Develop and design interface, front pages, and the tools to navigate on a web site
Develop the technical specifications for a web site as well as design visual specifications, image layout, and graphic design.
Identify challenges, recommend and implement solutions for web sites
Work with JAVA, Mac, UNIX and Window platforms
The ability to create and maintain databases required for development using Oracle 8I and Microsoft Access
Work with HTML authoring tools, scanning/digitizing tools, graphics/illustration software, specialized databases, Oracle 8i, SQL, Dreamweaver, and Microsoft FrontPage.
Excellent knowledge of physical database design, performance tuning, network administration .

The ability to plan and implement backup and recovery strategies
Work in an environment where goals and strict timelines must be met and manage multiple tasks

Work both independently and collaborate with other professionals

I encourage you to view my online professional portfolio, which contains samples of my graphic design work and will direct you to the web sites I have designed. I hope that my work will speak for itself.
