stories." -- Arthur C. Clarke

Sure, there's a lot of serious science, but it's also a lot of fun.
- One of my favorite authors is David
Brin, creator of the Uplift Universe and the incredible ecology/cyberspace
novel Earth.
- Another long-time favorite is Harlan
Ellison, who's chillingly beautiful short stories have probably permanently
damaged my psyche. He contributed to work on Babylon
5, the best speculative fiction story ever to grace the Tube.
- A new favorite is Octavia
Butler. Her Xenogenesis books explore some interesting aspects
of reproductive biology and conservation genetics.
- A great author with a great web site is Orson
Scott Card. The Ender series is a brilliant ethical and anthropological
exploration of our interactions with each other, and with "The Other."
On his site, Hatrack River,
you can read stories, novel chapters and essays.
- Connie
Willis has written two of the funniest books ever. To Say Nothing of
the Dog kept me sane (relatively) during my Indonesian fieldwork -- quirky
time twists and a classic comedy of manners and general confusion -- brilliant!
Bellwether is the best story I've ever read as far as capturing what
scientific research is really like. Erik says, "wouldn't it be great
if the "i" on the forehead really did become a fad, so you
could see them coming?" Maybe we should start branding them.
And Finally...
