Summary

The Suaq Balimbing research site is home to a unique population of tool-using orangutans, in addition to other endangered wildlife such as tigers and sunbears. Illegal logging activities were observed in and around the study area, well within the borders of Gunung Leuser National Park where logging is prohibited. The perpetrators have yet to be punished for their actions. Though progress is being made, it is likely that illegal logging will continue in the area indefinitely unless there is extensive international pressure on the Indonesian government and the timber extractors to halt the destruction. As of May 2000, the research site is still closed due to political instability in the area.

Urgent action required to save Leuser Ecosystem, one of the most critical conservation areas on earth, from threat posed by roadbuilding project. In December 2002, a proposed road network threatens to expand illeagal logging and other environmental destruction in the Leuser Ecosystem. Click here to find out more.
