Background

I grew up in Jackson, Michigan, a city of about 50,000 near Lansing and Ann Arbor. I went to the University of Michigan as an undergraduate (B.A. in Political Science, 1991) and did my graduate work at the University of Illinois (M.A., 1993; Ph.D. 1996). I have been an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Florida State University from 1995-2001, and Associate Professor (with tenure) since August 2001. My research focuses on international conflict, with a special emphasis on interstate rivalries and on conflict over territory; I also founded and direct the Issue Correlates of War (ICOW) research project. My teaching centers around international relations theory, international conflict, and research methods. Separate pages on my web site offer more details on my background, my research, the ICOW Project, and my curriculum vitae (the academic equivalent of a resume).
