The Study Group of Culture and Ethnicity was co-founded by Nancy E. Hill, Velma McBride Murry (University of Georgia) and Emilie P. Smith (Centers for Disease Control) and is part of the Family Research Consortium (Linda Burton, Ana Mari Cauce, and Mark Appelbaum, co-PIs). Drs. Hill, Smith, and Murry invited 12 multidisciplinary, multi-ethnic scholars from across the country who are committed to moving the field forward in three major ways:
      • Defining and conceptualizing the constructs of culture and ethnicity;
      • Developing meaningful assessments of culture and ethnicity;
      • Examining the influence of culture and ethnicity on parenting and ethnic socialization.

The Study Group has lead Preconference Meetings at the Family Research Consortium’s Summer Institutes for the past five years and has presented workshops, symposia, and discussion hours at relevant national professional meetings. The Study Group's work was featured in a special section of the Journal of Marriage and Family on "Culture, Ethnicity, and Family Processes" (Vol. 63; Nov., 2001). The collaborative papers and research currently underway and planned by this group will inform culturally appropriate measures and databases on demographically diverse families.

The activities of the Study Group are(have been) funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, W. T. Grant Foundation, Family Research Consortium III, Pennsylvania State University’s Center for Human Development and Family Research in Diverse Populations, National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute of Mental Health.
