Summer of Service at Duke
Mission:  Through making service based internship opportunities attractive, accessible, and affordable, Summer of Service hopes to contribute to the continuing education of Duke students, alumni, and the entire Duke community while creating a lasting impact on communities outside of our walls.
Project Definition  Summer of Service seeks to provide (research-based?) service internships for Duke students who are enthusiastic about improving our nation’s non-profit organizations and communities. By providing students with a list of select internships and guiding them to the valuable resources available through the Career Center and Public Policy department, we will help students find meaningful internships, and encourage greater participation in and higher satisfaction with service-based internships. Furthermore, Summer of Service will pair students with an alumni host family to live with for the summer, thereby helping students feel connected in the cities where they serve. This would not only to foster a connection between Duke alumni and current students, but would also be an effective means for eliminating the high cost of housing in a different city for the summer. We will serve as a liaison between the Career Center, Public Policy Department, and Alumni Affairs in order to help students find an unforgettable service-based internship and affordable housing with a welcoming host family. Additionally, we hope to enlist the support Alumni Clubs in participating cities by asking for their contribution of a $1,000 stipend for each student interning in that city.
