What
does the PTA do?
We provide
resources to enhance the overall educational experience for our children, and
are a strong link between families and the school staff. Examples of recent PTA-funded projects
include a fully equipped computer lab, new playground equipment, enhancements
to our Nature Trail, Artists in Residence, new risers
for the chorus, Science Day, literacy programs, field trip transportation,
extra supply money for teachers, and more. PTA projects generally benefit the entire school, or at least an entire
grade level.
What is
the PTA's annual budget?
Last year
we raised (including donations) almost $65,000, most of which was spent on projects
at Hillandale last year, and some of which will be
carried over to start this coming year.
How do
we raise money?
There is
one major fundraiser in the fall (starting just after school starts), and the
second major one is 'Spring Fling', which is a family carnival with a silent
auction and raffle. Other fundraisers include the Read-a-thon, as well as funds
raised with the participation of local merchants (Kroger, Harris Teeter, local
restaurants, also
What if
I'd rather not sell or buy stuff? Can I just donate?
Donations
are a great way to support the PTA budget, and are tax-deductible when made
payable to 'Hillandale PTA'. A receipt will be
provided.We strongly encourage
donations as 100% goes directly to the school. If the PTA received $86 per student in donations last year, all of the
budget would have been raised with no other effort. Families should give, however, according to
their means-some can afford more than others.
How can
I be involved?
You can
join a committee, chair a committee, or create a new one if you see a
need. You can attend general PTA
meetings. You can volunteer in your
child's classroom or serve as a gradeparent. You can help run our spring carnival (Spring
Fling). There are many needs from maintaining our nature trail to running the
read-a-thon to bringing goodies for teacher appreciation to helping teachers
build webpages. Moms and dads are needed. Harnessing
the talents of our whole community will create a rich learning environment for
our children.
What is
the PTA Board? Do I have to be invited?
It is not an 'invitation-only' group, but is open to any PTA member who chairs (or co-chairs) a committee of the PTA, or who serves as an officer. This means serving as the point person/coordinator for one PTA activity or fundraiser. Take a look at the committee list to see what might interest you or propose a new committee if you see a need.
What is
expected of Board members?
We meet once a month, and an important meeting is the first one of the year where the budget is drafted. We try to make these meetings brief and fun. You don't have to come to every meeting. You are expected to follow through with your committee's work and report on it to the other board members. You are expected to keep the interests of all Hillandale's children in mind as you serve.
Why
should I become a board member?
In addition
to contributing your talents to the Hillandale
community, by being on the Board you will have more opportunities to build relationships
with other parents and the school staff. This way you will understand the
bigger picture of issues that affect you and your child. Also, people who serve together tend to care
about one another. This makes our community stronger, and we need your talents!
What if
I don't have childcare in the evenings when PTA meetings take place?
Children
are welcome at general PTA meetings, and the program often involves them. We
are a family organization! At board meetings, children are also welcome: sometimes
they bring their homework or can read during the meetings.
What if
I have no transportation to the school in the evening?
Please let
us know and we can help you find a carpool arrangement.
Thanks very much!
