They will be collaborating with distinguished Italian musicians; for those with approiate experience, there will be ample opportunities for performance. Excursions will also be offered to sites of local historical and artistic importance. The three sites where this program will be based are rich in history, art and tradition. Acqui Terme, which is 30 miles from the city of Genoa, has been famous since the time of the ancient Romans for its thermal springs, and a therapeutic spa is still active there. Bologna, the capital city of the region of Emilia Romagna, is home to the world's oldest university and has one of the best preserved medieval town centers in all of Europe. Dolo is a peaceful town located on the Brenta River, only a short distance (9 miles) from the magnificent cites of both Venice and Padua.
Students will choose two of three courses offered. All courses will be taught in English.
MUSIC 187: Jazz Performance and Theory. Instructors: Paul Jeffrey and the staff of italian schools. This course will provide a study of the theoretical issues of rhythm, melody, harmony and counterpoint, as they relate to the medium of jazz. Keyboard harmony will be included. Attendance at daily rehearsals, and performance in Jazz clubs and concerts will be required.
Prerequisite: some proficiency on a musical instrument, and prior experience in jazz performance.

MUSIC 141S.01: The Development of Jazz in Italy. Instructors: the staff of the Italian schools. This course will provide an historical overview of jazz as it has developed in Italy. The current state of jazz will be surveyed, and the students will be introduced to Italy's leading practitioners.

MUSIC 141S.02: The Music of Sonny Rollins. Instructor: Paul Jeffrey. An historical survey of the life and contributions to jazz of saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Rollins' original contributions and recorded solos will be analyzed, and his influence on European musicians (with special reference to Italy) will be explored.

No knowledge of Italian is required. There will be a Resident Advisor for the program who is fluent in both English and Italian. There are no prerequisites for Music 141S.01 and 141.S02; prior experience and some instrumental proficiency is required for Music 187S. Students wishing to enroll in Music 187S should submit, along with their application, an audition tape to prof. Jeffrey. Students need not bring their own musical instruments (such as Drums and Acustic String Bass) These instruments are available for use provided by the Italian music schools.
Students will be accommodated in small hotels in double rooms. Breakfast and dinner will be taken in the hotels; lunches may be taken in local cafes and pizzerias.
