John Farnsworth/Frank Lacy
Quintet
and the Duke Jazz Ensemble
Friday, February 7, 2003
John Farnsworth is a freelance musician in New York City performing on both the tenor
saxophone and trombone. He is currently performing every Monday evening at Smoke with
his quintet featuring a different horn soloist each week. Some of the special guests
who round out the quintet are: Eddie Henderson, Danny Moore, Frank Lacy, Joe
Magnarelli, Jim Rotondi and Steve Turre.
Frank Lacy attended the Berklee School of Music and later Rutgers University in
Jersey before becoming an in-demand trombonist in New York City. He has worked with
artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Abdullah Ibrahim, Oliver Lake, Bobby Watson, and Julius
Hemphill. He was also the musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for a
year and a half. Lacy's versatility allows him to work heavily as a leader or as a sideman in
small-group or big band settings.

After studying with Paul Jeffrey at Duke University, Jeb Patton attended Queens
college where he studied with Roland Hanna. Upon graduating, Jeb began working with
Jimmy Heath and the Heath Brothers. Patton appeared on Sharp Nine's "Class of 2001", a
record documenting some of New York's finest young jazz musicians. He works extensively
in both jazz and classical settings, and has appeared recently as a sideman on records with Paul Jeffrey, the
Heath Brothers, and Paul Kendall.
Special Feature: An Evening with Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase, piano
and the Duke Jazz
Ensemble
Friday, April 18, 2003 - Page Auditorium
Chevy Chase, world famous actor and comedian,
began life in the spotlight when he joined the Saturday Night Live
crew in 1975. He made his first movie hit, Seems Like Old
Times, in 1980, and went on to start in classic comedies
Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation, and Fletch. Many
people don't know that Chase's other love besides acting and
comedy is playing jazz piano. He has been emcee at the Boys Harbor
jazz concerts for the last two years, and also played some piano
at those events. Chevy has played twice at Duke now, and both concerts have
been sold-out endeavors.
This year the Duke Jazz Ensemble looks forward to joining Chase for his third concert
feature as at Duke University.
