![]() | DEPARTMENT: MUSIC COURSE NUMBER: 141S COURSE TITLE: Jazz Saxophone Innovators PROFESSOR: Paul Jeffrey CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION: PREREQUISITES: Some performance ability in a jazz medium and Music 074 PERMISSION REQUIRED: Yes OTHER: Ability to read music and a basic knowledge of harmony SYNOPSIS OF COURSE CONTENT: Many jazz saxophonists were innovators for their instrument and for their art. Particularly important are their improvisations in which technical and musical challenges were met in new ways. Through an analysis of the solos of leading saxophonists (both by listening to their recordings and by examining transcriptions in score) in roughly chronological order, we shall trace the contributions of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and others to the jazz tradition.
