Before registering, first-time
students must audition and obtain the permission of the instructor. A
further audition may be required to continue applied music in subsequent
semesters. Auditions are generally held during orientation and the first
week of classes. For information about times and sign-up sheets, please
contact the Music Office at
(660-3300). For auditions at other times, students may contact individual
instructors to make arrangements.
It is the student's
responsibility to add the appropriate course and section (once approval
has been obtained) BEFORE THE END OF DROP/ADD. If you have a problem,
contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies (660-3331)
immediately.
A supplemental fee is charged. For the spring of
1996 the scale was $290 per term for one-hour weekly lessons and $145 per
term for half-hour weekly lessons. These may change. Interested students
are advised to contact the Bursar's Office for current information. The
fee is waived for music majors for instruction on their first instrument
or in voice. It is not refundable after the end of drop/add.
Credit is awarded at the level of a quarter course for half-hour lessons
(080-087) and a half course for hour lessons (090-097). The courses may
be repeated for credit. Sophomores, juniors and seniors possessing an
exceptional technical and interpretative command of a musical medium may
be allowed to register for independent study in musical performance (180,
182, 184) at a full credit. These involve taking hour lessons and
performing a half-length recital at the end of the term or a full-length
recital at the end of two successive terms. (In the latter case, students
will have to give a brief performance before a jury at the end of the
first term.)
Use of the practice facilities in the Mary Duke
Biddle Music Building is free for students enrolled at Duke. For others
there is a charge (information available from the Music Department
Office).
