John Ore, Bass
and the Duke Jazz Ensemble

After studying cello at the New School of Music in Philadelphia, John Ore took up the bass, and attended the Julliard School of Music. He has since played with guitarist Tiny Grimes, saxophonists Lester Young, Ben Webster, and Coleman Hawkins, and pianists Elmo Hope, Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines, and Bud Powell. Mr. Ore joined Thelonious Monk's quartet in 1960 and remained until 1963, making 2 tours of Europe. John Ore is noted for his rhythmic precision, fullness of tone, and excellent choice of bass lines and phrasing. He is currently working with the Sun Ra Arkestra.

Winard Harper, Drums
and the Duke Jazz Ensemble

Winard Harper's first major gig was with Dexter Gordon in 1982, and shortly thereafter with Johnny Griffin. He was soon noticed by Betty Carter and played in her band for 4 years. He also played with Abdulai Ibrahim. Winard joined his brother Philip to form the Harper Brothers band, which experienced tremendous success on the charts and on international tours. Winard has three of his own albums and currently leads a successfully touring group, the Winard Harper Sextet.

John Hicks, Piano
and the Duke Jazz Ensemble

John Hicks began playing piano at the age of 6, and later studied at Lincoln University and the Berklee School of Music. He played with Sonny Stitt in his teens and gained recognition in New York working with Art Blakey. Mr. Hicks has performed with Charles Tolliver, Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Hamiet Bluiett, David Murray, and Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, and many others. He is noted for excellent use of harmony, his accompaniment of vocalists, and solo piano performances. Recent work includes the cd Something to Live For and work with his John Hicks Trio.

The Italian All-Stars, under the leadership of Mr. Gibellini, represent one of the best jazz groups in all of Italy. They have performed with saxophonist Steve Lacy, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, saxophonist Dewey Redman, and pianist Walter Bishop. The Symphonic Duke, recorded in Milano, includes members of the Italian All-Stars.

Ray Bryant, Piano
and the Duke Jazz Ensemble

Ray Bryant began playing jazz piano at age 14 and by 22 he had accompanied Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, and others. He has since toured or recorded with Betty Carter, Carmen McRae, Jo Jones, Coleman Hawkins, Curtis Fuller, Dizzy Gillespie, Zoot Sims, Benny Carter, and many others. In his solo playing, he often plays figures in the right hand against stride or boogie-woogie patterns on the left. On recordings as a sideman, this influence is less strong and he plays in a variety of styles. Recently, Mr. Bryant released a solo cd, Alone at Montreux, and has led the successful Ray Bryant trio.

Sam Rivers, Tenor Saxophone
and the Duke Jazz Ensemble

Sam Rivers, although primarily a tenor saxophonist, also plays soprano sax, bass clarinet, piano, flute, and viola, and is an accomplished composer. He attended the Boston Conservatory in 1947; he also attend Boston University. Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young were his main influences at that time. He has performed with Miles Davis, Cecil Taylor, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, Andrew Hill, and J.C. Higginbotham. Recent projects include albums from the Sam Rivers trio and his big band, the Rivbea All-Star Orchestra.

Mr. Rivers will be joined by special guest percussionist, Mimmo Cafiero from Palermo, Italy. He is one of the main organizers of the Sicilian jazz scene. He has performed with Archie Schepp, Curtis Fuller, John Faddis, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ray Mantilla, Steve Grossman, and others. His recordings include Mimmo Cafiero Quintet and Static Energy with Maruizio Caldura. He is the organizer of the Carini Jazz Festival near Palermo, which is one of the largest jazz festivals in southern Italy. He also has a jazz school in Palermo.
