Future NC Interstates? Other Possible Interstate routes that have been suggested to NCDOT. A Few Other Future Interstate Suggestions Completely unofficial ideas of mine
PTI Airport Connector Possible
number for proposed freeway that would run
from I-73/Bryan Blvd near PTI Airport to split
of I-40 and Business 40 west of Greensboro, or for an alternate
proposal (the I-73/74 Connector) that would run the
highway from Bryan Blvd. at NC 68 to the I-74 Winston-Salem
Beltway (if both parts are built the part running from the I-73/74
Connector south to I-40, (called the 'I-40 Connector' in some
proposals) could get another number). The I-73/74
Connector proposal was added to the NCDOT State Transportation Improvement
Program (STIP) in November 2005 for environmental and planning purposes.
It is under study by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority as to whether
it should be built as a toll road. The proposed highways can be seen
in this map courtesy of the Winston-Salem Journal:

Durham East End-RTP Connector This
proposed interstate would run from the current I-85/US 70 interchange
in Durham to I-40 using an upgraded US 70 freeway to the planned East
End Connector freeway running from US 70 to the Durham Freeway (NC
147) (the project includes upgrading US 70 to a 6-lane freeway from
I-85 to the Connector). The route would then run south to I-40 along
the Durham Freeway (which could be widened to 6 lanes). This would provide
a single numerical designation for drivers from I-85 to RTP and since
the East End Connector is funded as Durham's urban loop project it would
be given an interstate number like other NC cities' urban loops. The even
number is appropriate since it would connect two interstates.
I-40 Greensboro Spur Better
number for the Business Loop 40 (Fordham Blvd.) freeway from
the I-40/I-73 interchange with the I-840 Greensboro Urban
Loop east to Business Loop
85. This designation replaced
the I-40 when that route moved onto the Greensboro Loop in February
2008. Unlike the now Business Loop 85 through Greensboro, this
route is up to current interstate standards, having been modernized
to a 6 to 8 lane freeway a few years ago, suggesting it deserves
better than a business route designation.
I-95 Raleigh Spur Number
for route that would use US 64 from I-95
to I-440 now that the US 64/264 Knightdale Bypass is
completed. Yes, it could be an even number like I-495
(a number suggested by the Regional Transportation Alliance, their
webpage promoting a Future I-495 is HERE,
see the Future Future NC Interstates? page). Extend it
to Rocky Mount east of I-95, if you want to justify the
odd number designation, or east along US 264 to the new US 117
freeway to Goldsboro (which some officials have suggested
be designated I-795, again see Future Future NC Interstates?
page).
Interstate 193 - Braintree to Cape Cod Yes,
this is not a North Carolina route, but one from my home
state of Massachusetts. The proposed designation for current
MA 3 between I-93 in Braintree and US 6 at the Sagamore Bridge
in Bourne. If one can take an interstate spur from Providence,
RI to Cape Cod why can't drivers from Boston to the Cape?
Besides, doesn't America's Hometown (Plymouth) deserve its own interstate?
Some
others suggest this route be I-93, like HERE
