EVERY AMERICAN DESERVES JUSTICE
FACTS:
-
Deepa Agarwal, a 20 year old American citizen, was murdered
in her apartment in Florida on July 11, 1999.
-
Orlando police found Deepa’s body in a cardboard box in her
closet on July 19, 1999.
-
An Indian national named Kamlesh
Agrawal has been charged with this heinous crime. However,
Kamlesh Agrawal fled to India on July 14, 1999.
-
Kamlesh Agrawal is a fugitive wanted in Florida to stand
trial for murdering Deepa Agarwal.
PROCESS:
-
India and the United States signed an extradition treaty
in 1997, which requires prompt extradition of fugitive offenders to the
requesting nation.
-
In the summer of 1999, the United States requested that the
government of India arrest Kamlesh Agrawal in order to extradite him to
the United States.
-
A year after Deepa’s murder, the government of India has
still failed to produce Kamlesh Agrawal and the United States government
has not applied enough pressure to persuade Indian authorities to arrest
the fugitive.
SEEK JUSTICE FOR DEEPA
American citizens should not be denied justice because
governments fail to abide by their treaty obligations. The United
States must pressure the Indian government to put forth resources to find
and arrest Kamlesh Agrawal. Kamlesh Agrawal must stand trial for
Deepa’s murder in Florida so that justice is served.
Join us, on July 11 at noon, for a vigil in front of the
