Dear Representative (your rep),
(Identify yourself here)
I am writing to you regarding Deepa Agarwal, and a case that is very important to me. Born and raised in Orlando, Deepa was an all American girl living the American dream. Having taken only two years to complete her undergraduate degree, she was the youngest PhD student in the history of University of Central Florida. On July 11, 1999, Deepa was senselessly murdered in her Orlando apartment. She was twenty years old.
Within a week, the Orlando Police under Detective Jeff Tramonte conclusively identified and charged a fellow student with the heinous crime. Kamlesh Agrawal, the accused, however had fled to India on July 14; currently, he is wanted in Florida to stand trial for the murder of Deepa Agarwal.
As required under the terms of the extradition treaty signed between
India and the US, a provisional request for his arrest was sent to India.
In eleven months, however, the Indian government has done nothing to return
the suspect to the US. I fear that Deepa has become just another file at
the bottom of a stack of papers on some bureaucrat’s desk.
I ask for your help to ensure that Deepa Agarwal doesn’t become a victim
of bureaucratic neglect. I urge you to bring this issue to the attention
of the Caucus on India and Indian Americans and inquire of the Government
of India a thorough account on their activities to find the killer of an
American citizen. I hope that I can set up an appointment with your office
to discuss this important cause more fully. Additionally, I will
be attending a vigil in front of the White House on July 11, 2000, in order
to make sure that Deepa’s memory is not forgotten. I hope for your
support at this vigil.
I can be reached….
Sincerely,
