Of Career

Duke Career Week is coming. Featuring a series of workshops and alumni panel discussions, Career Week, raised by Duke Career Center, aims to provide senior students with job-hunting and career performance skills. "Making connections", this must be an excellent opportunity for those who will soon be facing job market. "Getting a job is not like a blind date; it's like a marriage. You have to do the matching." Even though I won't need a full-time job until a few years later, I see clearly that Duke Career Center offers great services and user-friendly job-searching databases, making it easier for students to begin the first step in their early careers. A university must be a good one if their graduates can find decent jobs; and vice versa. Duke is doing well in half of the work while the other half is the students' own duty. Will I be able to do that half well?

In fact I had never thoroughly considered my own career. Take what as my occupation and where to set it up, at this point these questions are still left unanswered. As a Ph.D. candidate, in the future I will probably work in an academic setting, either universities or institutions. These may be the best choices for me since I hate both politics and economy, which are the two most important aspects of the society, which are also, in my opinion, full of liars and mammonists. My father made the same choice ten years ago, but I'm not sure whether he held the same considerations. He is a winner and he is leading a peaceful and happy life. What more can one expect?

Frankly speaking I'm a lazy person and would be happy to choose not to work at all if I could. If I had sufficient time and money, I would travel around the world. However, I have to at least feed myself not to even mention traveling. Working is a must and traveling is for fun. An Old saying tells me that I have to do what I must first and then I can do what I like. To me this somehow seems a conflict, since the time I can spent in my whole life is so limited while the number of the places I want to visit goes to infinity. I admit that I am greedy on this travel matter and a little childish as well.

Next weekend I will visit the city of New York and therefore have to miss some of the Career Week events, for example the Career Fashion Show. What a pity :(
