Topic: Introduction to Oedipus the King DAY ONE
Objective: 1. Students will be able to explain the mythic foundation for Sophocles' Oedipus the King. 
2. Students will be able to convey the story using a visual map. 
3.  Students will be able to explain five methods of characterization. 
4.  Students will be able to identify the characterization of
Oedipus the King.

Objective / Purpose

Today, we will learn the Cadmus and Oedipus myth that is the foundation for Sophocles' Oedipus the King.  I will put the story on the board so that you can draw a visual representation as well as take notes in your notebooks.  We will also look at how Oedipus characterizes himself and how the Thebans characterize him.                                                                                Go over homework.                                                      Outline:

Instructional Input/ Modeling Tell students the Cadmus and Oedipus myths using a story map on the board.  Point out characters and plot.  Be sure to clarify that the audience already knew the story when they saw the play.   30 min board markers
Instructional Input Characterization:
There are five main methods of characterization:
Indirect Characterization:
- details about the character’s appearance
- details about the character’s actions
- conversation or thoughts of the character
- other characters’ opinions of the character
Direct Characterization:
- direct statements about the character’s personality from the writer

Modeling Personal character analysis: Think of your favorite color and your favorite animal and give three reasons why/ adjectives of description.  (shows how you want to be seen and how you think others see you)  Discuss how this characterization is similar to how an author portrays a character.   5 min  
Guided practice Discuss where we see characterization in Oedipus the King and what kinds of characterization Sophocles uses.  Go through the first few pages pointing out and discussing examples.  Q: What kinds of characterization did you see?  Where?

o pg. 264- conversation or thoughts of character
o pg. 265- others’ opinions
o details about actions: Oedipus as a man of action, as a good leader, as a good person (sending Creon to oracle, solving the riddle of the sphinx)

Independent Practice Homework: Reread 263 - 275.  Where do you see Dramatic Irony as a result of knowing the mythical background?  How does Sophocles' use of indirect characterization of Oedipus influence the audience?  Describe Oedipus' character based on the first part of the reading.   1 min assignment written on board
