Foil character: - a minor character whose situations, actions, and/or traits are in direct contrast to a principle character - through contrast, this character sets off or illuminates the major character Think about how you describe yourself, your family, or your friends. When you think about their characteristics, do you ever compare them? A foil is a literary device that highlights comparison. By making two distinct characters that work off of or complement each other, the author is able to make comparisons to describe the major character. |
