Dukeobsrvr
Dukeobsrvr originally started as a Livejournal blog, but during and after the lacrosse scandal became the most popular blogger at Duke University. His style is humorous, yet crass and completely biased. While his commentary on Duke is definitely entertaining, it provides no real insight into Duke University. If you are bored and want to read something interesting, the blog definitely is effective. However, if you are looking for something truly insightful, it is not the page to go to.
About.com - College Drinking
When I first decided to begin researching, I, like many other people would do, I typed "college drinking" into the Google searchbar. About.com, a website featuring instructions, commentary, and advice regarding a plethora of subjects, had one of the first listings. The advice it gives regarding alcoholism and binge drinking definitely is not poor. With that said, considering the number of government and university based websites regarding college drinking and alcohol abuse, About.com falls well short of the rest of them. Their information is unbalanced, only focusing on the negative aspects of college drinking, and self-referencing, which is strange considering About.com is not an authority in binge drinking or college social life.
Junkscience.com
www.junkscience.com is a website run by Steven Milloy and endorsed by FoxNews. The website supposedly "debunks junk science." With that said, the opinions found on this website have so much bias that the scientific value of any information on this website is extremely doubtful. For example, Milloy discusses how global warming really does not exist. Contrary to his belief and synonymous to the belief endorsed by NASA, global warming does indeed exist. On his website, Mr. Milloy takes a shot at the value given by the NIH of 1,400 college student deaths a year due to alcohol, which was initially endorsed in A Call to Action. Milloy's reasoning is in doing so is effective, yet unfortunately, his reasoning does not apply to the actual survey put out by the NIH. Mr. Milloy's website contains only poisonous propaganda and little real scientific backing. It truly is a dangerous website.
www.crazystudent.com
Crazystudent.com is a website about "what students should be doing in college." While many would consider that to be a healthy balance between academics and social life, crazystudent.com defines it to be drinking, drugs, and sex. There was not much analysis or really any insight on the website regarding college drinking patterns and their benefits as well as setbacks. In fact, most of it was just suggestions on drinking games and sexual positions. While it was entertaining, crazystudent.com provided minimal constructive value. Do not go to crazystudent.com for insight, because you definitely will not find any there.
http://www.drinkingstuff.com/
www.drinkingstuff.com was a website I visited in trying to learn more about the "tools of the trade" in college-binge drinking culture. While they do offer an array of shot glasses, beer bongs, and liquor flasks, they seem to lack in terms of content. I did not gain an understanding of college-drinking by visiting this website. However, I did find out that they offer a bounty of Duke drinking products (not affiliated with www.dukedrinking.com). Also, a warning to anyone who is visiting this site. Some of the information does involve pornography and other pornographic content.
