The press has given the Heaven's Gate suicides a great deal of attention. Most notably, ABC is developing a made-for-television reenactment of the group's tragic end and Diane Sawyer recently interviewed remaining cult member Rio DiAngelo.

In addition to the Time magazine's special report, "A Level Above Human," used throughout this presentation, the following are some media resources referred to when researching Heaven's Gate. Most contain links to additional online material.

See the searchable index of Heaven's Gate documents provided by the Washington Post.

^ Individual articles
John Katz, Wired's media reporter, writes on coverage of the mass suicide and the Net community's reaction: "Finding the Middle Media."

Brock Meeks, Net reporter at large, has a similar piece on the MSNBC site, "Online Journalism Fights 'Wacko Factor'."

Writing for Slate, David Plotz is one of the few reporters to have taken the time to look at the Websites created by Heaven's Gate: "The Cult, the Comet, and the Web."

Josh Quittner, in his article in Time, "Life and Death on the Web," discusses finding many of the same strange suicidal messages that I did by looking at the Heaven's Gate source code.

Also in Slate, Michael Kinsley offers a satiric view of the perils of print in electronic times, "A Dangerous Medium."

^ Informed points of view
Alan Hale, co-discover of the Hale-Bopp comet, shares his insights in the Skeptical Inquirer, in "Hale-Bopp Comet Madness."

In an interview, "Troubling Side of Tech, Faith Convergence," Erik Davis, Wired's reporter on the Net and religion, has some interesting thoughts on Heaven's Gate.

The American Religion Information Center offers information about cults and Heaven's Gate.

The American Family Foundation provides information on cults and psychological manipulation.

The Spiritual Counterfeits Project has uploaded a special report on Heaven's Gate.

Sally Jagello offers a sane Web page Against Intolerance and the Media Agenda.

^ Other online sources
Yahoo maintains perhaps the definitive collection of Heaven's Gate pointers.

Heaven's Gate bookmarks have been gathered by Joel Elliott in the Religious Studies department at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Images of the Hale-Bopp Companion,"Hale-Mary," thought by members of Heaven's Gate and the Farsight Institute to be trailing the comet, are available.

Art Bell, whose radio show may have "inspired" the suicides, offers a collection of links and pointers.

Unarius, UNiversal Articulate Interdimensional Understanding of Science, is an organization that offers proof that UFOs not only exist but they interact with us and the universe through reincarnation. Unarius is thought to be the inspiration for The X-Files, which was one of Heaven's Gate's favorite television shows.

Mother of All UFO Links is a comprehensive list of extraterrestrial pointers.

HigherSource.org, "We Kill Ourselves Working for You!", is a parody and commentary on the media frenzy following the cult members' suicides. (More Heaven's Gate humor.)

This is just the beginning. More links to come as I continue to work on this topic . . .
